Özet

When Republic was proclaimed on 29 October 1923, an important revolution showing the main characteristics of the newly founded government happened. In 1924, people did not celebrate it enthusiastically; however, official ceremonies started in 1925. Republic’s 10th year was celebrated enthusiastically in Ankara and in other cities of Turkey. After that date, a big effort was made so that people celebrate the Republic Day enthusiastically. The documents of the Republic Day celebrations made in Siirt between 1938-1948 in the archive were examined. According to these documents, we can understand how the Republic day was celebrated, which procedures were used, how the ceremony programme was prepared and applied. It can be easily seen that these ceremonies were of great importance in Siirt and ceremonies were followed by the headquarter. An effort was made to integrate government with the public. Important preparations were made in Siirt for the Republic Day ceremonies. Main streets were ornamented in the city, flags were displayed all around. The celebrations lasted three days; day and night. Senior officers of the city made a great effort to involve local people to the celebrations.
