Izmir and Manisa provinces have significant potential in chestnut production. However, the increase in the drying of chestnut trees has been an essential problem in recent years. Chestnut cancer is the most important reason for drying. However, pests that feed on the woody tissue on the trunk and branches of chestnut trees and cause wounds were also observed to be important. The density and damages of Yellow-legged clearwing [Synanthedon vespiformis L. (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae)], which is harmful to the woody tissue of chestnut trees, in chestnut areas in the last 10 years have been observed to be important. This study was carried out in the chestnut areas of Izmir and Manisa provinces between 2013 and 2014. The morphological characteristics of some biological stages of S. vespiformis, and its distribution, population density, and adult flight patterns were investigated in the study. The research was conducted in 4 districts with the highest chestnut production and in a total of 52 orchards in Izmir and Manisa provinces. The distribution, adult flight patterns, and density of the pest were determined by sexual pheromone traps and visual control methods. The traps were checked once a week. As a result of the studies, S. vespiformis was found in all orchards where observation was made. It was observed that the emergence of adults started in the first week of June and continued until the beginning of October. The maximum emergence of adults was observed during the period from mid-July to mid-September. For two years, a total of 1.627 adult individuals were caught in traps in seven orchards. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the traps and pheromones used were suitable for monitoring the pest in nature and that these traps could also be used in mass trapping studies to be carried out in the following years. © 2020 Parlar Scientific Publications.
