Öğe Amidst fury, regret, and remorse: An analysis of university students who were placed in disliked majors(Sage Publications Ltd, 2017) Toprak, Mustafa; Tosten, RasimThis study is an attempt to uncover the factors leading students to study in the majors they dislike. Using a qualitative design, the study aims to explore the forces that cause students to make career choices against their will, and to investigate their future plans during their struggles with their parents and disliked majors. The study was conducted with 13 first-year university students who studied different majors within a school of education. Since the foci of the study were students who disliked their majors and were placed in teaching departments against their will, a purposive sampling technique was used during the selection of participants, and data were analyzed through the content analysis technique. The study revealed that the students had been placed into disliked majors under the simultaneous influence of either one or several forces, such as parental pressure to keep their children geographically close, perceived employment opportunities, life-time job security given to teachers at public schools, fatigue, and failure to get a high scores to be placed in their preferred choice. The study presents suggestions for educational policy-makers by discussing determinants of teaching career choices, by making specific references to parental influences on their children's decision-making, and by showing that some teacher candidates are placed in teaching majors by making random choices.Öğe Positive psychological capital and emotional labor: A study in educational organizations(Taylor & Francis As, 2017) Tosten, Rasim; Toprak, MustafaThis study aims to explore the effects of teachers' psychological capital competencies on their emotional labor competencies based on their perceptions. It follows a quantitative research design adopting survey method. Data were collected from 266 teachers working in Siirt Province, Turkey. The results show that teachers have high levels of positive psychological capital (all self-efficacy, optimism, trust, extraversion, and hope dimensions) and though relatively low compared to psychological capital competencies, they often display emotional labor behaviors. It was also found out that PsyCap competencies teachers possess have an impact on their tendency to display emotional labor behaviors. The study presents valuable theoretical and practical implications for research on PsyCap and emotional labor at school organizations.Öğe Public leadership behaviors of school principals: does it affect teacher motivation and job satisfaction in Turkish culture?(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2022) Han, Bunyamin; Tosten, Rasim; Elcicek, ZakirPurpose The aim of this research is to examine the public leadership (PL) behaviors of principals working in public schools and its effect on teacher motivation (M) and job satisfaction (JS). Moreover, the mediating role of JS in the relationship between PL and M is also explored. Design/methodology/approach This research is quantitative and designed in relational survey model conducted with 327 teachers working in Siirt/Turkey in 2020. In the research, Public Leadership Scale, Teacher Motivation Scale and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire were used. Descriptive analyses were used in data analysis. Moreover, mediating role of job satisfaction between public leadership and teacher motivation was tested. Findings According to the results, the public leadership behaviors of school principals, motivation and job satisfaction of teachers are high according to teacher opinions. Additionally, public leadership behaviors of school principals have an effect on teacher motivation and job satisfaction. On the other hand, this study found a negative effect between public leadership and motivation when the effect of job satisfaction is controlled. The possible reasons for this situation were discussed in term of cultural differences. Practical implications The results of this study imply that the leadership behaviors of school principals have cultural elements. Future research should be careful in measuring the political loyalty dimension of the public leadership and should take cultural element into consideration. Originality/value Although there are many types of leadership, the type of leadership differs depending on the purpose of the organization, environmental conditions and culture. The lifestyle of the society, current developments and the structure of the organization are effective in interpreting the leadership needed in the organization. When looking at the models created about leadership in organizations, the effect of this type of leadership on organizational behavior is generally tried to be explained. This is also the case for motivation or job satisfaction. Therefore, this study also focuses on the effect of public leadership in explaining the job satisfaction and motivation of employees in educational organizations. However, another distinctive aspect of this research is that the cultural structure of the society is emphasized in the model to be created.Öğe Teacher stress and work-family conflict: examining a moderation model of psychological capital(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Toprak, Mustafa; Tosten, Rasim; Elcicek, ZakirSchools are becoming more stressful work environments, and teachers are becoming more vulnerable to job-related stress because of innovation overload, high job demands, and work-family conflict (WFC). Enhancing teachers' psychological capacities may prove helpful in managing stress under such work conditions. While past research has focused on the relationship between WFC and stress, there is limited empirical evidence in the education context on the effect of psychological capital (PsyCap) on changing the magnitude of (moderating) the interplays between WFC and stress. Therefore, this study investigates the moderation effect of teachers' positive PsyCap on the relationship between teachers' WFC and job stress. We adopted a quantitative research method and collected data from a randomly selected sample of 385 teachers in Siirt, a city in the South-East region of Turkey. Data were analyzed through descriptive, correlation, and hierarchical moderated regression statistics. Results indicated that WFC increases teachers' job stress, and PsyCap moderates the relationship between WFC and job stress by mitigating the effects of WFC on teachers' job stress.Öğe The relation between the exposure to mobbing and burnout levels of secondary school teachers(Common Ground Research Networks, 2018) Tosten, Rasim; Avci, Yunus Emre; Okcu, VeyselThis research study was conducted to determine the relation between the level of burnout and the level of exposure to mobbing. The population of the research composed of 1,153 secondary school teachers working in Siirt city center in 2014– 2015 academic year. As the number of teachers included in the research population is not high, sampling was not made and 354 of the distributed scales were analysed. In this study, ‘Negative Acts Questionnaire’ Scale was used to measure the frequency of teachers’ exposure to mobbing behaviours and to determine the teachers’ burnout levels, ‘Maslach Burnout Inventory’ (Educators Survey) was used. The results showed that teachers are exposed to negative behaviours under the subdimensions of ‘work-related mobbing’ and ‘mobbing directed at social relations’ at ‘occasional’ level. With regard to the burnout levels of the secondary school teachers, the highest value is observed in ‘emotional exhaustion’ sub-dimension, while the lowest is in ‘depersonalisation’; and the personal accomplishment is at a moderate level. © 2018.
