Öğe Evaluation of distal femur fractures in cats by hybrid external fixator(Ankara Univ, 2024) Gulaydin, Ali; Alkan, IsmailIn this study, clinical and radiological findings obtained from the treatment of distal femur fractures in cats with hybrid external fixator were evaluated. A total of 10 cats of different ages, breeds and genders with clinically diagnosed femur fractures were used as research material. In the study, hybrid external fixators consisting of circular and linear fixators were used as osteosynthesis material. Closed reduction and external fixation methods were used in 2 cases diagnosed with closed fractures, while limited open reduction and external fixation methods were used in 8 cases diagnosed with open fractures or excessive dislocations. In the radiological examination findings, it was determined that fracture consolidation started on the post-operative 7th day in 9 cases and on the 10th day in 1 case, respectively. Fracture healing was completed in 4 weeks in 2 cases, in 5 weeks in 2 cases, and in 6 weeks in 6 cases (osseous callus was detected). Fixators were removed one week after healing was completed in all patients. In the study, soft tissue complications such as edema in the extremities in 3 cases, mild pin infection in 3 cases and open wounds in 4 cases were determined. However, it was observed that these complications did not adversely affect the recovery time. As a result, with the data obtained from the study, it was concluded that the distal femur fractures in cats of the age and weight scales examined in the study can be successfully treated with the hybrid external fixator system.Öğe Isolation of aerobic bacteria from surgical site infections following orthopaedic operations in cats and dogs(Czech Academy Agricultural Sciences, 2024) Gulaydin, Ali; Gulaydin, Ozgul; Akgul, Mustafa barisSurgical site infections (SSIs) cause significant complications in the postoperative period in veterinary surgeries. Determining the aetiology of infections is crucial for increasing treatment success rates. This study aims to assess treatment processes by identifying the bacterial agents responsible for infections occurring in cats and dogs after orthopaedic operations and to determine the antimicrobial resistance profiles of these agents. Strains isolated from SSIs were retrospectively analysed in patients brought to the Surgical Clinic of Siirt University Animal Health Application and Research Hospital between 2021 and 2023. The isolates were identified using MALDI-TOF MS. The disc diffusion method was applied to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. A high isolation rate was detected in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacteriaceae. According to the antimicrobial susceptibility results, cephalosporin treatment was continued in only one of the cases in which prophylactic treatment with cephalosporin group antibiotics was applied. Consequently, this study revealed that preoperative prophylactic antibiotic administration may not be sufficient in preventing surgical site infections. Diagnosis of aetiological agents and evaluation of antimicrobial susceptibility are essential in preventing surgical site infections and determining effective treatment options.Öğe Treatment of Long Bone Fractures in Calves with Ilizarov External Fixator(Georg Thieme Verlag Kg, 2018) Gulaydin, Ali; Sarierler, MuratIn this study, the advantages and disadvantages of Ilizarov external fixator in the treatment of long bone fractures in calves were investigated. For this purpose, 26 calves of different breeds, ages and genders, having metacarpal (n = 12), metatarsal (n = 5) and antebrachial (n = 9) fractures underwent surgery under general anaesthesia. Frames, which were prepared before surgery in accordance with the radiographic findings, were applied under open reduction in 18 cases, and under dosed reduction in eight cases. In the postoperative period, all calves except one started to bear some weigh on the injured limb on the first day, while the remaining calf did the same on the second day. The consolidation started in the first 2 weeks for 24 of the calves and was completed by the day 55. In the two remaining cases, it started in the third week and was completed on day 71 and day 90, respectively. The soft tissue wounds were completely healed in all calves and no complications occurred. In five calves that were not kept in our clinic pin tract infections formed. They were controlled rapidly, and there was no change in the fracture reduction or healing duration. In conclusion, in our study, the Ilizarov external fixator system was applied to long bone fractures in cattle calves, in cases where the fragments were not large enough to apply pins and plates, and which became open and infected after defective bandage practices or unsuitable treatment. Fractures completely healed in all cases, without any complications. These results show that many of the long bone fractures experienced by calves, that were considered for amputation due to the anticipated inability to treat them successfully, could be treated with the use of the Ilizarov system.
