Comparing heavy metal contents of roadside soils with coastal area soils
(Journal of International Environmental Application & Science, 2013) Gülser, Füsun; Sönmez, Ferit; Çığ, Arzu
In this study, accumulation of heavy metals in roadside soils was investigated. Soil samples were taken from the refuges of main road (polluted positions) and from the coastal areas (unpolluted positions) far away from the intensive traffic. Iron, zinc, copper and nickel contents of soil samples changed with the sampling positions. There were significant differences (P<0.01) among the locations for lead contents of soils. The mean lead contents in unpolluted positions and polluted positions were determined as 0.581 ppm and 0.887 ppm, respectively. The percentage increases in heavy metal concentrations in polluted positions according to unpolluted positions were obtained for zinc (374.16 %), copper (291.40 %), lead (236.41 %) and nickel (736.87 %).

(International Caucasian Forestry Symposium, 23-26 October 2013, Artvin, Turkey, 2013-10) Gülser, Füsun; Türkoğlu, Nalan; Çığ, Arzu
Juniperus excelsa Bieb. covered 97% of juniper forests in Turkey are used in landscape design, wood industry and as a screen for wind, snow or sound. The objective of this study is to determine the nutrient contents of juniper leaves taken from 9 different locations in Van District. Also, soil samples were taken from the same locations where plants sampled. According to leaf analyses results, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc and copper contents were found between 1.19-2.04%, 12.25-17.97%, 2.22-2.98%, 36.18-74.81ppm, 181.63-324.32 ppm, 10.91-12.93 ppm and 12.90-29.34 ppm, respectively. The nutrient contents, except K and Mg, showed significant differences among the locations. However, there were no significant differences among the physical and chemical properties in soil samples, except, salt, lime and iron contents. While Fe content of soil samples had significant positive correlation with Fe contents of leaf samples, lime content of soil samples had significant negative correlation with Fe contents of leaves.

(Journal of International Environmental Application & Science, 2011) Gülser, Füsun; Çığ, Arzu; Sönmez, Ferit
Nowadays, environmental pollution related in industrial development is one of the most important problems. The researches in this field are generally conducted using hyper accumulator plants. The phytoremediation properties of some ornamental plants used in landscape have been also investigated. The objective of this study was to determine accumulation of heavy metals in leaves of some ornamental plants used in the landscape of Yüzüncü Yıl University campus area near Lake Van. Leaf samples of the plant species belong to leafy, coniferous and shrub were taken from the refuge of main road in the campus area affected heavy metal pollution due to intensive motorized traffic, and from the coastal areas far away from the intensive traffic. Nickel, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc and copper concentrations were determined in leaf samples. There were significant differences among the plant species (P<0.01) according to Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd contents of leaves. There were also significant differences among the locations (P<0.01) for Fe, Zn, and Cd contents of leaves. Interactions between locations and plant species were significant (P<0.01) for the heavy metals, except Pb. The highest Fe, Zn, Cu, and Cd concentrations were obtained in species of Cedrus libani A.Rich (618 ppm), Betula alba Linn. (106.30 ppm), Salix alba L. (24.54 ppm) and Eleagnus angustifolia L. (0.28 ppm), respectively. The highest Ni (6.36 ppm) and Pb (3.76 ppm) contents were determined in Pyracantha coccinea M. Roem.

(ISPEC Journal of Agr. Sciences, 2020) Gülser, Füsun; Çığ, Arzu
The objective of this study was to determine the tolerance of hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis L. c.v. “Blue Star”) as a hyper accumulator plant to lead contaminated media. This research was carried out in a completely randomized experimental design with three replications in green house conditions. Four doses of lead (control, 20 mg kg-, 40 mg kg-1, 80 mg kg-1) were applied to each growing media having 500 g soil: sand mixture in 2:1 ratio. The distillate water was used in irrigation and Hoagland solution was applied for fertilization. At the end of the experiment, effects of lead applications on all of plant growth criteria and flowering were found significant (P<0.01) except leaf number and stem diameter. The lowest first flowering time, full flowering time and first floret withering time were obtained as 77.00 day, 79.20 day and 82.39 day in control, respectively. The highest plant length and flower length were obtained as 229.91 mm and 146.36 mm in 20 mg Pb kg-1 application. The highest flower diameter and floret number were found as 63.03 mm and 42.42 in 40 mg Pb kg-1 application. Generally, while the lead doses increased flowering time, leaf length, plant length, flower length, flower diameter and floret number increased.

    (I. Uluslararası Süs Bitkileri Kongresi, Aralık-2019) Çığ, Arzu; Gülser, Füsun
