Öğe A subject of dispute between the Ottoman Empire and the American Bible Society in the early 1900s: the Bible colportage(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Coskun, YasinThis article examines the effects of the Ottoman Empire's restriction on Bible colportage in the early 1900s on Ottoman-US relations. This restriction adversely affected representatives of the American Bible Society (ABS), which had been active in Ottoman lands since the second quarter of the nineteenth century. ABS colporteurs were prevented from working in many parts of the empire. The ABS appealed to the United States for help with this situation. By putting pressure on the Ottoman Empire through its legation in Istanbul, the US made efforts to lift the ban on Bible colportage. However, the Ottoman administration, claiming that colporteurs were spreading nationalist ideas under the pretext of selling Bibles, did not want to allow Bible colportage, despite the pressure. This problem, which became a small-scale crisis between the two countries, is examined in detail in this article through an analysis of archival documents.Öğe An Important Actor in Ottoman-Mexican Relations during the World War I: The United States of America(Hacettepe Univ, 2021) Coskun, YasinThis article examines the application of the Ottoman State to the US administration for the protection of the rights of the Ottoman citizens in Mexico during the First World War and the developments afterwards. Since the Ottoman Empire did not have a consulate in Mexico, the Ottoman citizens residing in this country were deprived of an authority to apply to defend their rights in case of difficulties. The Ottoman government took action after the increased complaints to the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ottoman Empire, which could not open a consulate in a country very far from its borders, applied for the assistance of the USA. A request was made for the protection of the interests of the Ottoman citizens in Mexico to be carried out by the US consular officers in this country and it was accepted. The US Department of State stated that the US officials would protect the rights of the Ottoman citizens living in Mexico within the framework of goodwill. However, it was also underlined that the US officials in Mexico did not become a public officer of the Ottoman State by doing as such. After the USA accepted the request of the Ottoman State, the Ottoman citizens in Mexico started to apply to the US consulates in this country about the problems they encountered. The US officials attempted before the Mexican administration to solve the problems. The US Department of State informed the Ottoman Embassy in Washington about these applications and the steps taken subsequently. After the USA declared war on Germany in 1917, the Ottoman-US diplomatic relations were severed. However, the issue of protecting the rights of the Ottoman citizens living in Mexico in the period until this time has been one of the topics in the Ottoman-US relations.Öğe The Reaction of the British Parliament to the Establishment of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus (1975)(Istanbul Univ, 2020) Coskun, YasinThis study examines the approach of the British parliament to the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus (TFSC), announced on 13 February 1975. Britain together with Turkey and Greece became one of the three guarantor powers of the Republic of Cyprus founded in 1960. Britain also has two military bases on the island. Thus, Britain closely followed the developments in Cyprus. After the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974, a new situation emerged on the island. Turkish Cypriots established the TFSC in the north of the island. In the statements made by the British government, there was a negative reaction to this new administration. British deputies brought the issue to the agenda of the British parliament. Both opposition and ruling party representatives reacted negatively to the announcement of the establishment of the TFSC. They also criticized the ruling Labour Party government for failing to prevent the announcement of the TFSC. In addition, the steps which Britain could take in the Cyprus problem were discussed in parliament. Within this context, the article analyses the debates in the British parliament after the announcement of the establishment of the TFSC and gives a general assessment of Britain's approach to the Turkish Cypriot decisions. This study, which is the result of a detailed examination of minutes taken at meetings of the British parliament, contributes to the field by examining British policy towards the Cyprus issue and Turkish-British relations.
