Öğe Adaptation and validation of the Parents' Self-stigma Scale into Turkish and its association with parenting stress and parental self-efficacy(Springernature, 2024) Aktu, Yahya; Aras, ErcanObjectivesIn the present era, parents frequently stigmatize themselves for their children's negative behaviors and inadequate social skills. Parents' self-stigma (PSS) may lead to a decrease in parental self-efficacy and quality of marital and family life. In light of these reasons, the principal objective of this study to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the PSS Scale (PSSS) as developed by Eaton et al. (2019) and to investigate the indirect effect that parenting stress has on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy.MethodsWe collected data from a total of 1,118 parents via random sampling, with the first part of the study involving 645 participants (Mage = 32.64 +/- 7.28) and the second part of the study involving 473 participants (Mage = 27.43 +/- 9.87). In the first part of the study, we employed structural equation modeling for the confirmatory factor analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient for the criterion-related validity, average variance extracted, and composite reliability analyses. Moreover, we calculated Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, and Guttman split-half coefficients for the reliability analyses. In the second part of the study, we utilized Hayes' bootstrapping method to assess the indirect effect of parenting stress on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy.ResultsThe first part of the study confirms the PSSS's 11-item, 3-factor structure, showing the Turkish form to have acceptable goodness-of-fit indices, and found Cronbach's alpha for the PSSS to be 0.89. Furthermore, the first part of the study demonstrates a significant negative correlation between marital life satisfaction and PSS. Meanwhile, the second part of the study has determined PSS to be positively related to parenting stress and negatively related to parental self-efficacy. The second part of the study also indicates parenting stress to have an indirect effect on the association between PSS and parental self-efficacy.ConclusionsThe study indicates the Turkish version of the PSSS to be a valid and reliable instrument in Turkish culture for measuring parents' PSS levels regarding their children, with higher scores indicating greater PSS. The scale can be effectively used in both research and clinical settings. The study also suggests parental stress to have a possible impact on the association between PSS and parental self-efficacy. Furthermore, addressing the variables of PSS and parenting stress in family-focused interviews and therapeutic interventions may contribute to increasing parental self-efficacy.Öğe ÇEVRİMİÇİ ÇOCUK İSTİSMARI RİSKİ ÖLÇEĞİ’NİN TÜRK KÜLTÜRÜNE UYARLANMASI(2024) Aktu, YahyaBu çalışmanın amacı Çevrimiçi Çocuk İstismar Riski Ölçeği’nin (ÇİR) Türk ergen örnekleminde geçerlilik ve güvenilirlik çalışmasını yapmaktır. Adulthood is examined through various theories; however, universality of many of these is still being discussed. One of these theories is Levinson's theory of life structure. Thus, the current research aims to examine the extent to which Levinson's theory of individual life structure is valid in Turkish society. The current study, with a qualitative design, was based on phenomenology approach. Participants were selected through maximum variation sampling among purposive sampling methods. Participants included 28 young adults living in seven geographically different regions. Data collection was conducted with The Form of Individual Life Structure Evaluation developed by researchers. Data were analyzed through content analysis in NVivo8.0 software. Through content analysis, self-representation and social relationships themes were obtained based on life structure category. Current research results showed that participants accomplished the tasks of modifying their life structures in a transitional period (ages 28-33 and 40-45) of their lives and the tasks of preserving their life structures in a building period (ages 34-39) of their lives. The findings indicated that participants in a transitional period built change-oriented metaphors and those in a building period built stability-oriented metaphors.Öğe Mediating Role of Positive and Negative Experiences in the Relationship Between Self-Competence and Regret among Adults(2023) Aktu, YahyaDespite the distress of regret, regret emerges as an important figure in self-regulation and shaping one's future. Although regret has an important role in adults' lives, the literature on how this emotion is affected by self-competence and which mediating variables affect this relationship is limited. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of negative and positive experiences in the relationship between self-competence and regret. The participants consisted of 572 individuals, including 402 females (70.3 %) and 170 males (29.7 %). The age of the participants ranged between 18 and 60 (25.34 ± 6.97). Correlation analyses revealed negatively relationship was determined between self-competence and regret, self-competence and negative experience as well. While positively correlation was found between self-competence and positive experience. The result of the analysis for the study model indicated that there was a mediating role of negative experience in the relationship between self-competence and regret. These results suggest that negative experience may be an underlying mechanism between self-competence and regret, and this experience can be exploited in therapeutic interventions.Öğe Self-Esteem, Family Support and Online Grooming Risk Among Adolescents: The Role of Problematic Internet Usage(Wiley, 2024) Aktu, YahyaThe online grooming risk (OGR) among adolescents has risen due to the development of technology and the growing use of social media. Although crucial links have been described among family support, self-esteem and OGR, little is known about the mechanisms problematic Internet usage has in these links. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of problematic Internet usage in the relationship among family support, self-esteem and OGR. The participants consist of a total of 406 adolescents in T & uuml;rkiye, with 283 girls and 123 boys (age, mean +/- standard deviation = 16.25 +/- 1.68). The relationships among the variables were examined using the Pearson correlation, while mediation analyses were carried out using structural equation modelling. Correlational analyses reveal family support to be negatively associated with both OGR and problematic Internet usage. Meanwhile, family support was positively correlated with self-esteem. Similarly, a positive and statistically significant relationship was determined between OGR and problematic Internet usage. The results indicate problematic Internet usage to mediate the relationship between family support and OGR as well as the relationship between self-esteem and OGR. These results highlight the importance of paying attention to adolescents' mental health regarding problematic Internet usage by considering the protective factors of self-esteem and family support due to their close association with OGR.Öğe The Adaptation of the Regret Elements Scale to Turkish Culture(2023) Aktu, YahyaHumans feel the need to reflect on their past decisions throughout their lives. Regret plays a significant role in this evaluation. Acknowledging regret is crucial, as it helps in rectifying undesirable past decisions and making healtier options in the future. Regret has cognitive and affective dimentions. Cognitive regret refers to reviewing past decisions, while affective regret belong to negative emotions. This study aims to adapt the regret elements scale (RES) in the Turkish adult population. The study involved 48 participants in the pilot application stage, 40 participants in the language validity stage, 599 participants in the confirmatory factor analysis stage, and 52 participants in the test-retest stage. The participants' ages ranged from 18 to 60 years. The study examined the language validity, confirmatory factor analysis, and criterion-related validity of the scale. Additionally, reliability measures such as Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient, Spearman-Brown split-half reliability, test-retest reliability coefficient, and differences between the 27% lower and upper groups were utilized. Mean explained variance (AVE) and combined reliability (CR) values were also calculated. The findings indicate that the language validity of the scale was high (.80). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the 2-dimensional and 10-item scale had acceptable fit indices [x2 / df= 2.09, RMSEA= .043, SRMR= .07, NNFI /TLI = .91, CFI= .94, GFI= .92]. The scale and its sub-dimensions were negatively correlated with Satisfaction with Life. Reliability analyses found high Cronbach's Alpha reliability (.92), Spearman-Brown split-half reliability (.95), and test-retest reliability (.75) coefficients, as well as significant differences between the regret score averages of the lower and upper groups of 27%. The AVE and CR values of the scale were also high. The findings suggest that the 2-dimensional (affective regret and cognitive regret) and 10-item RES is a valid and reliable measuring tool for assessing regret in the field of mental health for adult individuals in Turkey. Overall, the RES can be considered a useful tool for measuring regret and its various dimensions. It is thought that the adaptation of the regret elements scale (RES), which includes these dimentions, will contribute to the literature.Öğe The role of parenting stress on parenting self-efficacy and parental burnout among Turkish parents: a moderated mediation model(Springernature, 2024) Aktu, YahyaObjectiveParental burnout is a significant problem that negatively effects parent-child interaction, parenting skills, and child well-being. Research has identified parenting stress as one of the leading factors in parent burnout. Although crucial connections have been explained between parenting stress and parental burnout, not much is known about how parenting self-efficacy operates in these relationships. This study aims to investigate the roles of parenting self-efficacy and number of children in the relationship between parenting stress and parental burnout.MethodsThe participants consist of a total of 456 parents (Mage = 35.64 +/- 9.28, Range = 25-65 years). The data were collected using a personal information form, the Parenting Stress Scale, the Parental Burnout Scale and the Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale. Relationships among variables were examined using Pearson's correlation, while moderated mediation analysis was carried out using Hayes's bootstrapping.ResultsThe correlation analyses reveal a negative relationship between parenting self-efficacy and parenting stress, between parenting self-efficacy and parental burnout, and between parenting self-efficacy and number of children, while a positive significant relationship was found between parenting stress and parental burnout. The mediation analyses show parenting self-efficacy to mediate the correlation between parenting stress and parental burnout. The mediating effect of parenting self-efficacy is also moderated by number of children.ConclusionsThis study provides empirical evidence for the effect of parenting stress and parenting self-efficacy on parental burnout, with fewer children in the household alleviating parental burnout.Öğe Yetişkinlerin Koronavirüs (Covid-19) Salgını ile Başa Çıkma Süreçleri: Karma Bir Araştırma(2024) Aktu, YahyaBu araştırmanın amacı yetişkinlerin Koronavirüs salgını (Covid-19) ile başa çıkma süreçlerinin nasıl olduğunu ortaya koymaktır.
