Öğe Child refugee's social skills and resilience: Moderating effects of time in refugee camp, parental education, and preschool attendance(Wiley, 2023) Kuru, Nilufer; Ungar, Michael; Akman, BerrinIn this cross-sectional study, we examine the relationship between social skills and resilience and the moderating effects of time spent in a refugee camp, parental education, and schooling on Syrian children who have been forcibly displaced to Turkey. Five hundred and twenty-six preschool-aged children (56.3% female, M-age = 5.79) were recruited to participate in this research. The Turkish version of the Child and Youth Resilience Measure-Revised (CYRM-R) and the Early Childhood Social Skills Measure (ECSSM) were used to assess refugee children's social skills and resilience, respectively. Results show that the children's social skills were positively related to resilience with length of time spent in a refugee camp, the parental education level, and preschool attendance moderating this association. These results highlight the role of social skills as a possible means of enhancing refugee children's resilience.Öğe Çocuğu Tanıma ve Değerlendirme Aracı Olarak Pedagojik Dokümantasyon(2019) Kuru, Nilüfer; Akman, BerrinErken çocukluk dönemi, çocuğu tanıma ve değerlendirme açısından kritik öneme sahiptir. Bu dönemdeçocukların gelişim özelliklerine, ilgi ve ihtiyaçlarına uygun öğrenme deneyimleri sunulması ancak çocuğun doğru birşekilde tanınması ile mümkündür. Çocuk, ancak tüm gelişim alanları ile tanındıktan sonra doğru birdeğerlendirmeden söz edilebilir. Bu çalışmada çocuğun gelişim ve öğrenme sürecini bütüncül bir yaklaşımla ele alanpedagojik dokümantasyon sürecine değinilmiştir. Çocukları sorgulamaya, düşünmeye, iletişim kurmaya, kendiöğrenmelerinin sorumluluğunu almaya, merak ve keşfetmeye güdüleyen pedagojik dokümantasyon uygulamaları,aynı zamanda öğretmenlerin de kendilerini geliştirmelerine imkân tanımaktadır. Pedagojik dokümantasyonunçocukların bütün gelişim alanlarını desteklemesi, öğretmen, çocuk ve aile arasında güvenli bağ oluşturması, olumluiletişimi geliştirmesi, ailenin çocuğun öğrenme sürecine dâhil edilmesine destek olması, öğretmenin kendinideğerlendirmesine fırsat sunması, çocuğun öğrenme sürecine etkin katılımını sağlaması gibi yönleri ile okul öncesieğitimde bir araç olarak kullanılması önemli görülmektedir. Pedagojik dokümantasyon hakkında genel ve açıklayıcıbilgilerin yer aldığı çalışmada; dokümantasyonun evrelerine, çocuk, öğretmen ve aile açısından önemine,dokümantasyon türlerine, dokümantasyon sürecine, öğretmenlerin dokümantasyonu anlama süreçlerine ve okulöncesi dönemde pedagojik dokümantasyonun yeri ve önemine değinilmiştir.Öğe Opinions of Academics on the Relation Between Mathematics and Creativity(2022) Kuru, Nilüfer; Akman, BerrinMathematics and creativity are two concepts that are not independent of each other. These two concepts have a major role in improving creative, critical, inquisitive and multidimensional thinking skills. Educators are highly important in teaching and improving critical thinking skills as well as mathematical skills which we face in every sphere of life. Aims: This study, which is based on this ideology, aims to reveal the opinions of academics on the relation between mathematics and creativity. Method: The participants of the study is composed of 103 academics working in the education faculties of universities. The responses of the academics to the research question were subjected to content analysis. Findings: The results of the analysis revealed that the responses of the academics (n=100) who pointed to a relation between mathematics and creativity can be grouped into four themes (common skills, flexibility, originality, common intelligence types). Result: The responses of the academics regarding the relation between mathematics and creativity revealed that the themes developed from the responses coincide with those in the literature.Öğe Social-Emotional Outcomes in Refugee Children: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of a School-Based Mindfulness Intervention Implemented in a Refugee Camp(Springer, 2024) Kuru, Niluefer; Ungar, Michael; Akman, BerrinEvidence-based early intervention programs for children at risk of developing psychological problems after exposure to armed conflict have been recommended as a major component in the treatment of psychosocial problems. This study examines the efficacy of a pilot school-based mindfulness intervention (SMI) and its impact on the social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes of war-affected refugee preschool children living in a refugee camp in T & uuml;rkiye. A single-blind randomized controlled trial with pre-test and post-test design was employed. A total of 76 participants (born in 2013) were randomized by the school into the 6-week intervention (n = 38) or the control group (n = 38). Measures included the State Self-Esteem Scale, Early Childhood Social Skill Measure, and the Child and Youth Resilience Measure-Revised. GLM repeated-measures ANOVA (p < 0,05) analysis showed positive effects of SMI on social skills (F = 126.06, p < 0.05, eta 2 = 0.63), self-esteem (F = 72.08, p < 0.05, eta 2 = 0.49) and resilience (F = 4.33, p < 0.05, eta 2 = 0.05) over time for the intervention group as compared to controls. Significant reductions in social and emotional problems were found for children who reported high levels of introversion in the pre-test. Pilot study results support SMI as a promising intervention for psychosocial problems that can reduce stress and anxiety symptoms among children exposed to armed conflict and forced migration.Öğe The social ecology of health promotion within war-effected refugee preschool children(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Kuru, Nilufer; Alici, Nilgun Kuru; Akman, BerrinHealth promotion frameworks that identify the risk and protective factors in promoting the health of war-affected preschool children living in refugee camps are limited. This study aimed to identify ecological factors in refugee camps affecting the health promotion of children in a vulnerable population using the storytelling method. Twenty Syrian refugee children aged be-tween five and six years were interviewed individually. Data were analyzed in NVivo V.11 software using thematic content analysis. Four major themes derived from the data included the following; risk factors that cause illness, awareness of the illness, strategies for coping with illness, and protecting and promoting health. These results suggest that health promotion programs targeting refugee children should be considered as a bio-socio-ecological approach.
